BoingBoing is hosting Charles Platt (the MAKE Magazine editor, novelist, and Wired contributor) as a guest blogger beginning today. Platt starts his first post with the declaration that he will be asking questions about climate and climate change "[a]t the risk of stimulating outrage". He is most certainly going to do that.
Many feel that recent warming is just a cyclical recovery from a
“little ice age” and may have little to do with human activity. Some
conjecture that we are already starting to descend into a new cooling
period which will be far more difficult to deal with than warming.
Whether they’re right or wrong is debatable; the point is that a debate
does exist, and those on the skeptical side should not be ignored,
ridiculed, smeared, or threatened with career damage.
Platt does at least one thing here that surprises me: he establishes that there is a significant number of credible scientific authorities who continue to question whether or not the global increase in temperature is man-made. I like seeing sacred cows challenged, even when they're my own. Platt's posts so far:
Shortly after these posts, regular BoingBoing blogger Cory Doctorow posted a series of rebuttals.
- Top independent, peer-reviewed research indicating that climate change is real, deadly, and caused by humans
I'm very curious to see where this goes.
