While your point is well-taken, I don't see a fundamental difference between coverage of this uproar and the one over the new Tropicana packaging (which they quickly repealed), or a dramatic reaction to a new / grossly redesigned automobile model. These get coverage all the time. How much coverage was given to NBC's plan to put Leno on at 10? Why should a social site be any different? It's used by millions just like the other products/services.
